Ricca Design Studios provided culinary design services for the renovation of the historic Memorial Union at the University of Wisconsin. Bringing an 82-year-old building up to today’s design standards and student expectations, while maintaining its historic character, is no easy task. To meet the needs of today’s students, the cafeteria-style dining space on the first floor was transformed to feature multiple unique retail outlets. Known as the “heart and soul” of campus, it was important that the facility kept some of the traditional dining destinations in addition to adding contemporary options.
The dining options within the Union include, Der Rathskellar, Daily Scoop, Peet’s Coffee, Badger Market, Strada, and Carte. Now students have more dining options, comfortable and flexible spaces, and the historic integrity with modern conveniences. Ricca worked closely with the university and design team to ensure seamless design throughout the various phases of the project.
